Heartgard Plus (Ivermectin / Pyrantel)
-
Description
Heartgard Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel) is medication for dogs that are at least 6 weeks old to prevent heartworm disease and to treat and control roundworms and hookworms.
Heartgard Plus chewable tablets come in 3 dosage strengths for dogs of different weights. The medication may be obtained to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
Directions
Heartgard Plus should be administered to your dog as your veterinarian has instructed. An appropriate dosage will be determined by your veterinarian based on your dogās weight.
Heartgard Plus is administered by mouth once a month during the period of the year when mosquitoes are active, as they can potentially carry infective heartworm larvae.
Administer the initial dose within 30 days after your dog is first exposed to mosquitoes. Administer the final dose within 30 days after your dogās last exposure to mosquitoes.
Make sure your dog chews rather than swallows the tablet whole. You may break the chewable tablet into pieces and feed to dogs that typically swallow treats whole. Alternatively, the chewable may be added to a small amount of dog food; however, you must ensure your dog consumes the full dose at one time. You may redose if any of the dose was lost.
Heartgard Plus should be stored away from light at temperatures between 68Ā°F and 77Ā°F (20Ā°C and 25Ā°C). Keep out of reach of children and other animals.
Refer to the medication leaflet that accompanies the prescription for more information on the use of Heartgard Plus.
Do not hesitate to reach out to your veterinarian if any questions or concerns arise.

Cautions
- Before your dog begins Heartgard Plus chewables, inform your veterinarian of your dogās:
- Medications
- Allergies
- Current health problems
- Past medical history
- Breeding, pregnancy, or nursing status
- Heartgard Plus is not for human use.
- Your dog should be tested for existing heartworm infection prior to starting Heartgard Plus. If infected, treatment is required to eliminate adult heartworms and microfilariae before your dog begins Heartgard Plus.
- Heartgard Plus is not effective at clearing microfilariae. Dead or dying microfilariae may be the cause of a mild hypersensitivity-type reaction, particularly involving transient diarrhea, that has occurred in clinical trials with ivermectin alone after some dogs with circulating microfilariae received treatment.
- Intestinal obstruction or choking has occurred. The chewable may be broken into pieces if your dog normally swallows treats whole.
Side Effects
